Keck Medicine of USC hosts DEI Fair in honor of Global Diversity Awareness Month

On October 26, in honor of Global Diversity Awareness Month, Keck Medicine of USC hosted their Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fair for on-site and remote employees throughout the health system. The fair saw nearly 200 participants across the enterprise. Everyone had the opportunity to speak with representatives of Keck Medicine’s employee resource groups, and those able to attend onsite enjoyed snacks and raffle contests.

Keck Medicine of USC celebrates Juneteenth

In honor of the Juneteenth holiday, Keck Medicine organized a number of events to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved Black people in the United States. Juneteenth is considered the longest-running African American holiday and has also been referred to as America’s second Independence Day. “Juneteenth is a day of reflection, a day of renewal and a day filled with pride,” said Dustin Baker, co-chair of Black Leaders and Colleagues at Keck Medicine.

Keck Medicine launches Women’s Initiative Network at International Women’s Day Symposium

On March 8, as the sun set over Keck Medicine of USC’s Health Sciences Campus, employees from across the enterprise gathered at Health Care Center 4 for the organization’s first annual International Women’s Day Symposium. The event hosted a panel on the current state of women’s health with prominent leaders from both the health care and fitness industries.

Patients honored in annual Mother’s Day tradition

In honor of Mother’s Day, the ambulatory infusion teams handed out roses to patients who visited the Los Angeles Treatment Center and Women’s Specialty unit, as well as the Koreatown/Buena Park, Orange County and Pasadena treatment centers during the week of Mother’s Day. This has become an annual tradition to celebrate patients who are mothers coming to Keck Medicine of USC for chemotherapy and infusion treatments.

Keck Medicine celebrates a week of virtual pride

From June 22 through June 26, Keck Medicine of USC celebrated Keck PRIDE, a week devoted to recognizing the health system’s diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) staff and its commitment to providing affirming care to LGBTQ+ patients. Despite the need to celebrate virtually, employees came together to promote messages of equality. “For us, medicine is not just a set of actions to improve physiological ailments of the body,” said Rod Hanners.

Choi nursing award winner aims to serve patients holistically

For Christina Garcia, BSN, RN, CCRN, care is a reciprocal relationship, one in which both the patient and the care provider learn and grow from each other. “I learn a lot from my patients and their families,” Garcia said. “These are people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and religious backgrounds. Because of these differences, I try to better distribute care by being sensitive to where they are and who they are."

Time for sweet celebration as Keck Medical Center recognizes latest U.S. News ranking

On the afternoon of Aug. 19, Broad Lawn, located in the center of USC’s Health Sciences Campus, was transformed into a giant candy land. Surrounded by towering cardboard cupcakes and lollipops, visitors milled about, partaking in a variety of sweet and savory treats, including popsicles, churros and fresh fruit. A stage rested on the far end of the lawn, where a backdrop of cardinal and gold balloons spelled out the phrase, “Sweet #16.”
